The Sydney Sixers BBL team finds itself again facing a do or die match to keep it BBL 06 hopes alive.
The Sixers recorded a brilliant come from behind victory over the Melbourne Stars on Saturday Night at the MCG after a masterful partnership between Johan Both and Sean Abbott saved it from almost certain defeat. A loss would have seen the men in Magenta exit the competition but thankfully the nerve of the two all-rounders recorded the Sixers its fifth win of the season and a place in the finals.
It doesn’t get any easier for the Sixers as it faces an in-form Brisbane Heat side that has the full support of Queensland behind it. With the likes of former New Zealand International Brendan McCullum and aggressive opener Jimmy Peirson starting down the barrel, the Sixers will have it work cut out if it wants to progress to the final.
The Heat possess one of the most potent batting lineups that can take the game away from any side with just a swift swing of the bat. Despite missing the damagaing Chris Lynn, Brisbane still has players that can cause damage as well as the bowlers to back it up where needed.
It will take confidence from chasing down 189 the last time these two teams met which was at the Gabba the venue of Wednesday’s Semi final.
It will take another inspired effort from the inaugural BBL winners if they want to progress and attempt to secure its second BBL triumph.
Last Meeting: Sydney Sixers 7-191 (Daniel Hughes 85, Brad Haddin 32) defeated Brisbane Heat 6-186 (Joe Burns 51, Jimmy Pierson 44, Sean Abbott 3-38) by four wickets with two balls to spare.
The Sixers pulled off a brilliant run chase that went right down to the wire last time out.
Daniel Hughes was the star with a composed 85 and a pinch hitting 32 by Brad Haddin got the men in magenta within reach. A similar batting effort come Wednesday night could just about seal a finals spot for the Sixers.
Brisbane won the only fixture between the two teams last year but the Sixers had won the previous two fixtures before that.
Player To watch: It can’t be anyone else then Sean Abbott can it? The man known as “Sabba” has been phenomenal for the Sixers with both bat and ball.
After coming on in leaps and bounds in BBL 05 with 13 wickets, Abbott has been even better this year as evident by his match winning 33 not out against the Stars on Saturday. He has collected 16 wickets with one five wicket haul to go with his tidy return of 46 runs at an average of above 15.
His consistent line and length as well as a cleverly masked slower ball has seen him become one of the deadliest bowlers in the BBL. His effort with the ball on Wednesday could decide the match for the Sixers.
The Squad: Moises Henriques (C), Sean Abbott, Jackson Bird, Doug Bollinger, Johan Botha, Ben Dwarshuis, Brad Haddin, Daniel Hughes, Michael Lumb, Nathan Lyon, Nic Maddinson, Colin Munro and Jordan Silk.
