Burkina Faso has marched into the quarter finals of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations with an impressive 2-0 win over new boys Guinea Bissau overnight.
With Cameroon’s draw against Gabon, the two-goal win pushed the West African nation to top of the group on five points at the end of the group stage.
It was the AFCON debutants who made the more positive start however as they hounded the Burkina Faso back four with constant raids in the opening exchanges.
That all changed when a mix up between defender Rudinilson Silva and goalkeeper Jonas Mendes saw Guinea Bissau concede an unfortunate own goal.
A lack of communication occurred between Silva and Mendes and the defender’s misguided header looped over the on-rushing Mendes and over the line for a goal. Not taking any chances, Burkina Faso striker Prejuce Nakoulma crashed the ball high into the net as Guinea Bissau desperately attempted to clear the ball away to safety.
The goal seemed to have sparked Bissau into life as they showed their attacking prowess through talented winger Piqueti.
He was somehow denied after making a weaving run and then hit a stringing shot that was expertly turned around the post by Burkina Faso shot-stopper Koffi Kouakou.
Early in the second half, Guinea Bissau had another opportunity to draw itself level when a corner fell into the path of an unmarked Juary Soares, however his goal bound shot was well blocked by Abdou Traore.
After absorbing all the pressure, The Stallions managed to go up the other end of the field and double its advantage through striker Bertrand Traore.
The Chelsea man who is on-loan at Dutch club Ajax, was cool, calm and collected as his left footed shot was placed past Mendes. The goal seemed to break the back of Guinea Bissau who look a deflated and defeated team for the final half-hour.
Knowing that the two-goal lead would be enough to secure it top spot in the group, Burkina Faso defended stoutly and smothered anything that came into its defensive half.
It finishes top of Group A on five points with a better goal difference then Cameroon who also advanced to the Quarter Finals.
