Will Somerville has spoken of his excitement of taking his first BBL wicket in front of a packed Sydney Cricket Ground in the Sydney Sixers six-wicket win over the Perth Scorchers.
Only drafted into the squad on Monday, it was a whirlwind 24 hours for the New Zealander who collected brilliant figures of 2-10 off 2 overs including the prized wickets of Michael Klinger and England International Ian Bell.
Thanks in large part to the spin trio of the Sixers bowlers Steve O’Keefe (1-23), man of the match Johan Botha (1-26) and Somerville (2-10) the Perth Scorchers could only muster 8-130 from its 20 overs.
The Sixers eased to victory after Sam Billings (40) and Johan Botha (28 not out) lead the charge.
Somerville was delighted with the result but also shared his excitement at collecting wickets at the SCG to open his BBL career wicket tally “It was exciting, it was really fun. Absolute treat really. You cant expect much more than that (getting a wicket in my first over)”.
Somerville also spoke about the excitement around a squad that is brimming with talent including English duo Sam Billings and Jason Roy.
“It’s an exciting time, we have some excellent fielders and Doug (Bollinger) and myself are probably the slowest out there as everyone else are whippets!”
“The English batters are exciting too, they’re great to watch. The squad is really strong and it is great to be able to learn off some of the class players around me”
2016 has been a very impressive year for the 32-year-old off spinner from Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club.
He took nine wickets in a Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia in Round two of the season at the SCG back in October. He also showed his all round ability by playing as a night watchmen in NSW 2nd innings.
Somerville will be hoping that he can squeeze in one more good performance into 2016 when the Sydney Sixers play the Adelaide Strikers on New Year’s Eve at Adelaide Oval.
“It’s a big game against Adelaide, they lost their last game so will be stinging for a win at home in front of a big crowd”.
The Sixers will be looking to reverse last year’s New Years Eve clash when they clash with the Adelaide Strikers on the 31 December.
In BBL 05, the men in magenta were on the receiving end of a painful defeat to the the Strikers by five-wickets in the final over, courtesy of a brilliant century to Travis Head.
The win over the Scorchers takes the Sixers to two wins from three games on four points.
