Sydney Sixers squad members Nic Maddinson and Jackson Bird have been called up to the Australian team for the Third test against South Africa at Adelaide Oval starting next week.
23-year old Maddinson was notified of his selection by Head of selectors Trevor Hohns via text message last night after NSW’s 198 run loss to Victoria at the SCG. Despite missing out on both innings with the bat, the selectors have given the New South Welshman a shot and are presumed to be excited by Maddinson’s explosive repertoire of shots, his superb running between the wickets and his versatility in the field.
Nowra born Maddinson already has a first class score of 116 scored for NSW against Western Australia in round two of the Sheffield Shield at the SCG.
Speaking to reporters at the SCG last night, Maddinson spoke about his development and how he has been game planning during Sheffield Shield games in the last two seasons “I’m not just a break the game open player). What I’ve tried to work on the last 18 months especially in my four-day game is developing a game plan which can be consistent on any wicket and in any conditions,” said Maddinson.
Maddinson’s success against the white ball in domestic one day cricket for NSW and T20 for the Sixers is sure to hold him in good stead against the pink ball in the upcoming day night test against the Proteas.
For Jackson Bird, the opportunity to represent Australia can’t come soon enough.
Overlooked by the selectors for the first two tests in favour of Peter Siddle and Joe Mennie, Bird gets a chance to prove his worth to not only the selectors but also to the Australian public.
Bird finished with wonderful figures of 5-59 against New Zealand in his most recent test at Christchurch in February of this year.
Bird already has 21 test wickets in 5 tests an an average of 25.
Also in the squad is Australian captain and Sydney Sixers official ambassador Steven Smith who will be hoping to get amongst the runs in the day night test.
Joining him are a trio of talented Sixers bowlers in the form of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood and Nathan Lyon.
The Third test starts on Thursday at 2.30pm.
