The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has assured the Australian public that their data is safe after the Census website was hacked by four overseas hackers last night.
“I can certainly reassure Australians the data they provided is safe,” chief statistician David Kalisch said on Wednesday night.
Approximately 2 million people were able to log their census data successfully before the website started to have technical difficulties. The census was targeted by four denial of service (DoS) attacks, Mr Kalisch said. The aim of the attacks was to knock the website off the server and cause inconvenience.
After the fourth attack the ABS decided to close down the system to ensure the integrity of the data.
